Feather lei have a rich and extensive cultural history in Polynesia, originating in the Marquesas islands over 1500 years ago. Feather-work is considered sacred—from its creation, to the doning of the laborious handiwork when completed. By the turn of the 20th century, men wore their Panama hats adorned with feather lei. Newt’s hatband feather lei are in the contemporary style called “Humu Papa” but retains a strong link to the Hawaiian feather lei-making tradition.
